Are you afraid of fear? Sure you are! Fear is a scary subject. It brings about thoughts that we do not normally consider. Our minds are prone to exaggerate to us. The rear-view mirror on some cars may say, “Objects in mirror may appear larger than they are.” That is exactly what fear does to our mind. We think things that are not true, about a situation of which we do not have all the facts, and even worse about something over which we have no control.
President Franklin D. Roosevelt said, “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself”. When we are afraid, what brings us the most fear?
1- REJECTION – No one likes to be rejected. Everyone wants to be accepted. You may have an idea, a dream, a desire that you believe would work. What holds you back from doing it? Probably one question would be, “What if it doesn’t work?” Well, the answer might be, “What if it doesn’t”. Will you still have family and friends that love you? Will it totally devastate you? Will you be forever scarred or broken by it? If the answer is YES to those things, then you might have cause to reconsider. If the answer is NO, you might just be afraid of someone not accepting it.
2- FAILURE – You say things underneath your breath like, “This will never work”, or “Here goes nothing.” Have you ever really thought about how many people have succeeded in life that were sure they were doomed for failure? That is human nature, but it is usually not true. It would be better to give it your best shot and fail, than to never try. It is a proven fact: 100% of things you never attempt, never succeed!
3- SUCCESS – I know what you are thinking, “Why would I be afraid of success?” Well for one reason, you have raised the bar and people will expect you to maintain that level. Our society seems to punish success like it is a bad thing. If you succeed, people will scrutinize your success. As a result, some people had rather fly beneath the radar of success so they do not have to keep up expectations. There is no need to worry about what is next; just do this one thing well. Succeed once, and the second time will become much easier.
What is your biggest fear right now? Usually if you will face it, it will run away.
